ENCELL TECHNOLOGY STUDY SHOWS 83 PERCENT ENERGY CONSUMPTION REDUCTION

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (November 8, 2011) – Encell Technology, Inc., a provider of next-generation battery management solutions, has published the energy-saving results of a recent customer study.  The study, based on information gathered from a regional wireless carrier working with the Encell Smart Power System (SPS™) for more than two years, demonstrated savings of more than 83 percent in energy consumption over traditional battery charging regimens. Reducing Environmental Impacts with The Encell Sentinel SPS™

At Encell Technology, we have a vision. We see an energy future that is far less reliant on the old ways of generating energy and increasingly committed to using alternative sources such as wind, solar, and wave. We see a future where this energy can be provided at a cost that is as low or lower than current fossil-fuel or nuclear sources, and with far less impact on our environment. We are committed to designing and producing products that lead us to this future. With our Sentinel™ line of products, we have created a battery management solution that is designed to extend the life of lead acid battery backup systems, reducing their impact on the environment, enhancing the reliability of the systems they support, and recapturing maintenance time and money through increased intelligence about the backup system’s state of health.

The typical backup system uses lead-acid battery stacks to supply power. These may be effective initially, but they quickly lose performance when they are used for even short periods of time. Continuous charging current takes years of life off these batteries; their temperature is raised by constant overcharging which causes grid corrosion, dehydration and positive active material degradation. These effects reduce capacity and power further.

There is also the risk that high temperatures from overcharging can cause thermal runaway, resulting in battery rupture, gassing or even an explosion. Battery performance is also strongly affected by environmental temperatures. Every 18°F increase from the ideal operating temperature of 68°F reduces the life of a battery by 50%. So at 120°F, a battery that should last 10 years can last as few as 2.5 years. This drives up replacement costs, severely increases the impact on the environment, and reduces the reliability of these critical systems. In the aftermath of disasters like Hurricane Katrina or the St. Louis tornadoes, vital communications networks that rely on reliable backup need support more than ever.

Drawing on our substantial battery design experience, Encell Technology has developed a total battery management solution called The Sentinel™ that is integrated with a primary lead-acid power backup system. There are numerous battery monitoring solutions available, but only Encell’s Sentinel™ not only monitors state of health but also executes a charging and testing regimen designed to extend the life of the batteries.

The Sentinel’s automated service and maintenance regimen substantially reduces battery replacement purchases, which ultimately helps reduce overall capital expenditures.  In addition, the Sentinel’s remote monitoring solution provides valuable information on the state of health of the batteries and the true state of backup availability without requiring a site visit by a technician, reducing operating expenses (OPEX) and simplifying maintenance visit planning. Our innovative approach to battery management and monitoring drastically reduces the risk of network outages and the resulting lost revenue, reduces the cost and frequency of onerous reactive maintenance visits due to battery problems and helps improve system reliability and confidence levels.
